Consumer protection refers to regulations and methods aimed at protecting and promoting the rights and interests of consumers and promoting fair trade practices. These measures may include:

  • Information and transparency: consumers should be informed about products, prices and conditions of purchase, in a timely and complete manner.
  • Product quality: regulations ensure that products are safe and meet certain quality standards in order to provide consumers with appropriate quality and safety when using the product.
  • The right to return a non-conforming product: consumers have the right to return within a certain time period products that do not correspond to what they have purchased, depending on whether it is a question of the usual or contractual properties of the product.
  • Fraud protection: the legislation protects consumers from misleading business practices that may mislead an inexperienced and unskilled consumer as to the properties and purpose of a product and thereby cause them harm or lead them to buy something that does not meet the consumer's needs when making a purchase.
  • Dispute resolution: consumers have the right to report problems and seek compensation or dispute resolution through competent authorities and institutions. Consumers have a whole range of legal mechanisms available to protect their rights and interests, such as out-of-court ways of resolving consumer disputes, reports to competent market inspections, reports to the ministry and lawsuits before civil courts.

The office provides legal counseling services to consumers regarding the conditions and ways in which they can exercise and protect consumer rights, representation in proceedings before traders, bodies for out-of-court settlement of consumer disputes, mediators, market inspections, courts, as well as drafting lawsuits for compensation for damages from consumer relations.

In the Republic of Serbia, consumer protection is regulated by the Law on Consumer Protection, which provides for a number of rights and obligations for traders and consumers.
